The $25 philanthropist: Bob Harris to speak on joys of microloan financing

Bob Harris wanted to help people living in poverty who had an entrepreneurial streak, so he donated $20,000 to individuals he found on the microloan financing website Kiva.org. Then he set out to meet them, and he wrote a book about them. Harris will discuss his philanthropy and his travels for the Skandalaris Center’s YouthBridge lecture Thursday, April 10.

Heather Corcoran, chair of the design program in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has been named director of the school’s College & Graduate School of Art.

Money Smart Week puts focus on finances, future

Events at Olin Library on Tuesday, April 8, will boost financial literacy for students and employees. Speakers include social entrepreneur Adi Redzic and representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Cutting phosphate in diet reduces deaths, heart problems related to kidney disease

Severely restricting dietary phosphate early in the course of chronic kidney disease can prevent related heart and vascular problems, a new School of Medicine study in rats indicates. Phosphate, an essential mineral, is found in colas, milk, beans and other products and often is added to foods as a preservative.
